Identifying a Friendly Employer
We believe no employer can rightfully claim to stand with the military without enacting impactful policies that enable the military Reservists in its workforce.
Our research reveals that many employers labeled as “veteran friendly” or “military friendly” fail to address the needs of Reservists who continue to serve while balancing civilian careers with military obligations.
At Friendly Forces, we identify great employers that have a demonstrated commitment to enabling the service of their military employees, and we provide education, consulting, and talent pipelines to organizations that want to better support and engage Reservists by helping them implement best-of-breed industry practices that help keep our military ready and our national security strong.
Genuine employer support to these service members through meaningful policy is a “force multiplier” that drastically improves Reservists’ ability to serve our nation by easing the financial and emotional burden on them and their families.
Leveraging decades of experience across sectors and organizations, an extensive professional network, and meticulous research, we developed a framework to identify and recognize those organizations that go above and beyond to support those still serving.
The Rating System
Our System
Our scaling system is an unbiased, objective reflection of what we perceive as a company’s commitment level to the serving military employees in its workforce.
Methodology
Words of affirmation and Veteran Resource Groups are nice, but what truly matters to a Reservist is how their military absence—whether for training or deployment—affects their career, financial security, and family.
We assess employers based on the generosity and simplicity of their military leave programs. We look for those organizations that have implemented paid military leave, and examine the extent, duration, and conditions of the benefit. The devil, as they say, is often in the details.
Criteria
Ratings range from 1 Star (Very Poor) to 5 Stars (Outstanding), based on the duration and type of military leave (fully paid, partially paid, unpaid) provided. Employers are deducted a Star if they impose restrictions or conditions to the paid military leave benefit. Examples include discriminating by order type (training vs. deployment), including military allowances as part of pay differential, or requiring a minimum tenure for eligibility.
Employers that earn our 3, 4, or 5 Star Reservist Friendly badge get listed on our platform as a Friendly Force and are then eligible to use our credential in partnership with Friendly Forces to highlight their support and impact to the Reservist community and our nation.
